Community Members March with Yamato Engine Workers Detained by I.C.E.

Community to Community Development, the Whatcom Peace and Justice Center, and the Whatcom Human Rights Task Force co-sponsored the fourth annual Immigrant Solidarity March, held on International Worker’s Day on May 1st. Over 250 people marched on a clear and warm day from Maritime Heritage Park to the Whatcom County Courthouse to hear speeches from those involved in the recent Yamato raids. The participants then continued the march to Cornwall Park to have a celebration with music, food, and futher speeches. Keynote speakers at the march featured former workers from Yamato Engines and Marco Estrella, who were victims of a military-style raid and harsh detention by local I.C.E. agents on February 24, 2009.  To see pictures from the event: click here! To view some of the speeches: click here! To learn more about the raid: click here! Bellingham Herald Article: click here!
